How the Payment Gateway at Authorize.net works
Authorize.net is a dynamic provider of a variety of payment solutions that enables and manages payment transactions for their merchant clientele. Their 12 years of great service and high level of customer satisfaction have earned them a reputation for business excellence and a customer base of over 200,000 merchants. At the core of their success is an innovative payment processing program called the Payment Gateway. The Payment Gateway is an advanced system combining computer technology and popular process to give merchants the ability to process a variety of payment transactions via the internet. In other words, the Payment Gateway is a tool that works with the internet to provide a medium through which credit card and echeck payments may be processed.
Authorize.net’s Payment Gateway program goes beyond the technology to offer support services that optimize the benefits of the system. The system is initiated through the use of an application program interface (API). As a side note, an API is an interface that helps your operating system to synch with the Payment Gateway program to perform the necessary operations. APIs are offered with the package you choose, have no up front fees, and also come with service tools and support. Tech savvy users can integrate themselves using these tools, while others have the option of contracting a developer or utilizing a pre-integrated solution.
Once integrated, you are prepared to start using the Payment Gateway. With a minimum of equipment its transaction processing capabilities can be used on web sites, in retail locations, for phone or mail order services, or even for mobile transactions. Thanks to its Internet Protocol (IP) technology, all transactions are performed at a speed well above its dial-up alternatives, without the reliability issues of dial-up connections, and at a security level that will put both you and your customers at ease.
The actual transaction process starts when a merchant initiates a customer transaction by using a point of sale system connected to the Payment Gateway. Authorize.net intercepts the information and routes it to a processor on a secure connection. The processor then forwards the transaction information to the Credit Card Interchange (a financial network that governs credit card transactions). The CCI passes the transaction on to the applicable credit card issuer. The issuer reviews the information, confirms the validity of the car, and checks the transaction against available funds. It then either declines or approves the transaction. If the transaction is approved, the issuer transfers the requested funds back to the CCI who transfers them on to the original processor. Everything comes full circle as the results move from the processor back to Authorize.net who records the information for the merchant and simultaneously reports the results to the transaction’s point o!
If origin. This entire approval process occurs in mere seconds. Meanwhile, the CCI transfers the funds to the merchant’s bank where they are deposited into the merchant’s account and usually become available within a week, depending on bank policies.
If it sounds like a complicated process, then you will appreciate how the Payment Gateway simplifies your part in it. All you have to do is enter the payment information and collect the funds. Every program offered by Authorize.net includes access to the invaluable Payment Gateway service.
