UNETHICAL SEO TECHNIQUES

Here is a list of some unethical items about Search Engine Optimization:

1. Trademark Keywords In Domain Names

It is unethical and illegal to register a domain name that includes a trademarked keyword.

Using it to attract customers is illegal. It is a violation of federal trademark law, which prohibits the use of someone else’s trademark, especially if it causes a “likelihood of confusion” among consumers over the internet.

2. Trademarked Keywords In META Tags

While it is not necessarily illegal to use trademarked keywords in your META tags, you can get sued though, and people already have.

The situation depends on why and how you are using the trademarked keywords for your site. If you are using the keywords in what seems to be a deceptive manner, then you are likely to lose your case in the keywords.

There has been a exception however, where one defendant who proved to the judge that she had a legitimate reason to use the trademarked keyword.

3. Pagejacking

The term pagejacking means copying someone else’s web page and submitting it to the search engines as your own work for it to get high rankings. It is quite often that pagejacking also involves page cloaking to some extent.

Pagejacking is almost the same as stealing copyrighted content. It is so obvious that you will be caught sooner or later.

4. Deep Linking

This involves providing a link directly to specific content on a web site’s sub-page, instead of linking to its home page as it normally would.

On July 5, 2002, the Bailiff’s Court of Copenhagen ruled in favor of the Danish Newspaper Publishers Association, which claimed that Danish company Newsbooster violated copyright laws by “deep linking” to newspaper articles on some Danish newspapers’ web sites.

5. Deep Linking Without Permission

An example would be, if a site you are linking to has stated that linking is prohibited, or that it requires permission first, then don’t link to them at all. If you do, you are going over technical illegalities.

6. Deep Linking Within A Frame

When you are linking to another site’s content by displaying it within a FRAME on your own site, and your advertisement is in another FRAME within the same site, you’re walking on thin ice.

This shows that you are basically “stealing” other people’s content to generate advertising revenue. It is generally recommended that you stay clear of this practice.

You must take care with the marketing techniques you use on your site. If it seems that a technique can be construed as illegal, you can search the internet for possible legal cases on the technique. If by any chance you can’t find any, then it’s good that the technique in question is worth pursuing. As promising as it may seem, the internet still has technical boundaries as any other businesses would.
